Can someone explain to me what VPN is. I know it is virtual private network, but what can it do. I am working on setting up my system to be able to have remote administration. I am currently doing it through PC Anywhere, but would like to utilze VPN for employee's who travel and need to dial into our network. The workstations are Windows 98 and the server is NT 4.0. Any good places to do some reading up on VPN? What can you do using VPN? Stuff like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

Hi,

Your ras server can be accessed over the internet using PPTP protocol and that is VPN.

so you talk to your ISP or see how you can make your ras server be on the internet and allowing only PPTP connections and your users can access your server from anywhere in the world if they can get on the net.

I hope this helps.

Be aware of the fact that PPTP is not 100% secure...
It's better to set up a certificate based solution
(L2TP over IPSec)...
Unfortunately, IPSec is only implemented in Win2K...
You could also go for a third party solution... Peter Van Eeckhoutte
