I have a SBS2k3. Remote users using Windows XP Pro on their laptops.

Question 1: In order to establish a VPN connection from the remote site to the server, does the laptop have to be a part of the domain before hand?

Question 2: If yes to Question 1, do I need to have the laptop physically in the office to configure it to be on the domain before creating a VPN connection?

Thank you,

Zam

1. No
2. No.
configure remote access service on the server and use windows native client on the laptop. but users may need admin rights on the laptops

Thanks, Busta. Okay. As a test, I've connected my laptop from home to the VPN to the office. However, I don't have any mapped drives and when I surf \my network places\Microsoft Windows Network... all I see is Workgroup. Not the domain. So, I'm unable to see the server; unable to create the map drives that I need. What am I missing?

yes you can map drives.

It if it a domain PC, you dial VPN before logging on to the domain.

If not, you can launch a scritp that runs

net use * \\servername\share

But first, you need to make sure you can resolve the server name. do a Nslookup on the server name, use FQDN.
