I've just gotten a VPN connection running between my home & office via 2 Linksys BEFSX41 routers. The tunnel is good and I can log onto the domain from home but I can't see the home computer from work! When I run ping tests from work I sometimes get a response from the home computer & sometimes don't. Even when I get responses it's usually 3 out of 4 requests at best.

All computers are running windows 2000 professional and the server is running Win2k Small Business Server. I have a static IP from my ISP @ the office (DSL) and a dynamic IP @ the home (cable). My router IPs are 192.168.1.1 (office) & 192.168.2.1 (home). All computers are set to obtain an IP address automatically except for the server which is set to 192.168.1.2

Please bear with me as this is my first server-based network setup and my first VPN setup. I have a hunch my problem might be in my IP addressing but I'm probably way off on that. Anyway, any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated as I am scheduled to move out of state this Friday and I really need to get this thing fully functional by then.

PS: I hope this will be solved when I resolve my VPN problem but just in case it is something else: when I log onto the network from home I can browse computers & files just fine. I've also been able to open word, excel, & publisher documents and I'm able to print to the network printer but when I try to open the (access) database we use at work (which is the main reason I needed the VPN in the first place) I get an error saying the file cannot be opened and to check to make sure all the neccessary libraries are installed. To check this I had a co-worker create a new database & save it to the server and that database I could open without any problems!? I also downloaded the database from the office to my home and it opened without any problems. The database I need to open is only about 20MB so I don't think it's a size issue.

Thank you for the help!

settng up your office server as a vpn server and have your offsite client connects to network share is one thing. and being able to get access to your home computer from work is another thing.

how do you check that you can't see your home computer from work?

also, if you can set your home computer to accept vpn connection from work, how can you do this with a dynamic ip at home?

I got it to work -- it was just some additional router tweaking.

Bilebalar, in answer to your question; the home computer is configured as part of the LAN network. I log into it as if I were in the office. The problem I was having was that the office server would allow the home computer to logon but then I couldn't access the files on it after that.

The way this is done with a dynamic IP address is such -- the work computer has a static IP address from my ISP so it is the host. My home computer has a dynamic IP so it is a client. IE I have to connect the VPN tunnel from home. If I tried to connect the VPN from work, it wouldn't know where to start looking.
