Help please!!

I logged on to a remote SBS 2003 server as a user whilst still logged on to my own office SBS2003 server.

I forgot to log off the VPN connection until I noticed that my web access was very slow. I know that some servers can be set-up to record the urls of web sites visited. If the remote server I was connected to via VPN is set to record, would my web visits be logged on this this server or on the one that I was connected to directly?

There are definite sensitivities here, so I would really appreciate some advise!

Depends how your browsing is handled.

When connected to a vpn you can use your default gateway to browse or you can use the remote.

Obviously if you use your own then nothing is recordable without looking at the logs on your PC. If however you use the remotes default gateway your browsing would be monitored.

VPN Properites, - Networking - IP Properties - Advanced - Use DGW on remote network will be ticked or unticked.

Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

Sorry to appear dumb but the wording in the dialogue box is not clear to me. Currently "use default gateway on remote network" is checked. Am I correct in assuming that this means I am using the remote's default gateway and not my own, in otherword, should I uncheck the box?

Stable doors/horses bolted and all that!! Just in case you were wondering no, it was not "dodgy" sites I was visiting but it would cause a lot of problems if the logs were looked at!! I will be able to access the remote as administrator, would it be too much for me to ask which files I should clean?

should I uncheck the box?"
It depends on what your admin wants and what your policy states!

Its both a good and bad idea to use the remotes Default GW like wise it has its pro's and con's to use your own! (helpful aren't I?). Security v's speed for example.

In terms of what to delete to hide your tracks depends on what - if anything is used to monitor internet access. You coubld be using a proxy server, IIS, firewalls or even you ISP to monitor the traffic and defpending on the granularity of the reports depends if you're in trouble!

Unfortunately this may be unique to your own compny so help would be very dificault to give.

Thanks for your reply. I only log on remotely for short periods so I want to be set up not to access the web through the remote server. As I read it I thus want to uncheck the "use default gateway on remote network" checkbox. Am I correct?

(The wording is a little ambiguous - it probably means "use the default gateway of the remote server whilst logged on remotely" but it could posibly mean "use my own default gateway when logged on remotely"!)

It is ambiguous to a simpleton like me anyway.
