SBS2000 server with exchange server. XPPro on remote computers. I can VPN into network using public IP but I cannot ping server public IP from remote workstation when it is disconnected from VPN. I can also telnet into port 25 on server. Original problem (and still is) that once the remote workstation connects via VPN I get an error message saying exchange server unavailable once I try and start outlook. This happens from 2 of 3 remote workstations but the 3rd works like a charm. All three seem to be configured the same. I tried turning the firewall and AV off with same results.

Make sure VPN server and clients are not using the same IP range. This search result may help,

Can't ping remote computers
Both sites, VPN server and VPN client, are using the same IP range, for example, ... Solution for Peer to Peer VPN using the same IP range. ...

Thanks for the links. I had looked through one of them before, but I was more careful this time. One error was the NIC bindings were in the wrong order, so now WINS is working. Still having a problem pinging the external NIC IP on the server from any place.

Do you have a router block the ping?

I'm not for sure if I do or not. I'll have to figure out how to check that out. I'm using a Netopia router on a DSL connection. What started this whole mess is this - - The boss has two remote computers he works off of. One at his house and one in the car. Both connect to the network via VPN. One connects to the excahnge server when he opens outlook and the other says the exchange server is unavailable. Both are running XP pro. Thanks for all your help. I'm learning as I go.

2 different pc's when you do
ping mailservername does xp resolve the name to IP?

If not then the laptop cannot resolve the name.

Try enabling Netbios over TCP
Try adding the exchange server name to the hosts file c:\win\sys32\drivers\etc\hosts

When connected to the VPN can you ping the mailserver ip address?

Iain

I cannot ping the mail server from either PC, VPN connected or not. One PC cconnects to excahnge server and the other does not. I thought I read that Netbios over tcp should be disabled on the external NIC.
