I'm about to loose my VPN virginity.
I have to set up a client with one remote site via VPN.
Host side has SCO Unix (no VPN support) and terminals with a couple of win98 machines.

Remote will be all win98 machines.

They want to be connected via VPN through internet,
using dsl or cable connections while still getting internet access.

We're looking for low monthly cost, reliability, and security.

The data is medical data, and needs to be as secure as possible.

also.... there will be a floating laptop that dials to an isp to gain access to the internet, and needs to be piped to the VPN.

obviously im not the VPN expert, I understand the theory... but no experience.

Thank you endlessly for any advice or recomendations on products.

Watchguard makes a $600 firewall (10-users, upgradable to 50) that includes VPN support. Their entire product line is top-notch. This will not only provide secure VPN (128-bit encryption), but will also protect the other machines on your host side network. I've used their products in the past and have been very pleased with them.

Check them out at or jump right to the neat little firewall (which supports broadband connections, by the way)

Regarding the WathGuard SOHO. It is definatly NOT worth the money. If you want a VPN solution Try D-Link or LinkSYS. Half the price for unlimited users. I am a fan of WatchGuard but with the new products out. They are very cost effective with the same features. I tried the SOHO and it cost $450.00 plus another $150.00 for the mobile user VPN support and it's only good for 5 users. For $360.00 you can get the D-link unit and it handles unlimited VPN sessions.

Hate to bust your bubble but you dont need to spend $400+ on a hardware router/firewall to have a secure 128bit encrypted vpn. you just need to drag that old 200Mhz beast out the cuboard put a nic in it, get a switch, and download a copy of *nix.
I think youll find thats a total of $0.00

Yea and iv herd that functionallty/ease of use argument its a lame excuse :)

Happy Vpning.

thanks to all who responded...
the recomendations proved very useful!
