Hi All,

Is it possible to access Active directory resources over a
VPN?

I guess I somehow need to resolve the following - I need to access shares / printers on local LAN machines via VPN connection but cannot access anything behind VPN server. Here are some of the possible solutions I am just not sure how to do it?

1. Can I be setup to browse the directory using "My Network Places"? How?

2. Can I be setup to browse the LAN using "My Network Places"? How?

3. Can I be setup to ping LAN machines using the command prompt (If I can PING, I can NET USE the resource)? How?

I currently have access to the VPN server but not via "My Network Places". I can use NET USE to access VPN server resources but no other machine.

Network setup:

- Static IPs
- 2 windows 2000 servers:
1. VPN server is domain controller / print server
2. other server is SQL server / file server

Go to goodle, search for tightvnc. It's free and when downloaded, can be run as a service. It has the option when you click on the upper left corner to allow you to lock the workstation, which you should do once you are done. I have 6 servers I admin remotely from home. Tunnel in using the vpn, then start a vnc connection. Let me know if you have any problems. Glen A. Johnson

(I also have this installed on 250 users here, so when someone calls, I just tunnel in and don't have to run out to the site.) Glen A. Johnson

Thanks for the reply,

I took a look at the VNC program and this looks like a very interesting program, but not quite what I had in mind in terms of solving my immediate problem. I need to be able to gain access to machines or shares on my network (domain based) from my VPN connection. I can currently only connect to the VPN server shares.

I have enabled the VPN server with WINS and set the other machines to use it. I can now ping these clients (as opposed to the unknown host message I was getting before WINS) but the request just times out. I would love to be able to browse the network neighbourhood from my VPN connected client machine. I have a feeling this is a routing problem but I thought WINS would fix it.

Don't know where to go from here on this.

Forget it...

I fixed it myself by adding a static pool of IP addresses in the same range as the internal LAN. No Network Nieghbourhood browsing is available but at least I can access the shared volumes on the other machines.
