VPN - strange subnet mask

In trying to establish a VPN link between an NT4 server (PDC)and an XP remote machine I seem able to establish the initial connection ie I can log on and the VPN connection seems to be made but using IPCONFIG on the XP machine indicates that it has been allocated a suitable IP address but the subnet mask is set at 255.255.255.255 and therefore I cannot ping the server, map a drive, browse etc. I am using PPTP technology - the server is connected to the internet through an Aramiska satellite broadband link and the XP machine uses a cable modem broadband link. The Aramiska firewall allows the setup of a VPN - evident by virtue of the fact that I can establish it in the first place. Can anybody offer any advice how I might rectify this strange subnet problem?
