I currently have several satelite offices connecting to my corp. office via a PPTP vpn connection. I'm using an application that needs to upload 80k-140k files once in awhile to a server back at the corp. office, but the speeds are pretty slow due to the VPN tunnel. Is there any way to tweak the amount of bandwidth a PPTP VPN uses...either at the client end or the server end. My vpn client is a SMC7004FW broadband router w/vpn (hardware) so I probably can't tweak that at all. My vpn server is a Win2k server. Any ideas?

Since the VPN rides on the IP connection (your Internet connection), you need to to tweak the Internet connection. Typically your MTU will do the trick. MTU would be set on the workstation that you are connecting from.

Take a look at and look for MTU or even Internet connection tweaking. There is also a nice program called DrTCP which makes changing your MTU and a few other options, very simple.

NtrOP, according to DSLReports, there is no way to tweak the MTU settings for a PPTP VPN connection. Also, even if there was a way to tweak these settings, wouldn't they only affect clients who were using the built-in VPN adapter that comes with windows? Since I'm using a piece of hardware that all clients access this would still not help me. Thanks for the idea though. I got to learn a little something about the MTU settings within windows. Its always good to learn new things.

You wouldn't tweak the MTU for the PPTP connection, you would tweak the MTU in general which in turn would help the PPTP connection. If MTU is indeed a problem, it will affect all communications including PPTP. The gateways won't matter if your MTU is the same or lower than the MTU of the gateway.

Take a look at DSL reports again and verify the MTU you need and the MTU you are currently at, if they are different, make the adjustment. You will realize a performance change.
