I am looking for a VPN Solution for the company that I work for. We currently have a W2K Server and we want to allow maybe one or two users to use the VPN to access the network.

We currently have a Linksys Firewall/Router between the Internet and our Server. Since we already have a router, I assume that all we need is the VPN Server and Client Software. If all we need is the software, could someone recommend a software brand and solution. Also if I am wrong in stating that all we need is the VPN Server and Client Software, could someone correct me there also.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Also if I have a Windows 2000 or 2003 Server, does it matter what version of Windows the clients have installed to tunnel in via VPN? I'm pretty sure a client with W2K or XP would be fine, but what about Windows 98 or ME?

Thanks again.

MR20,

Since you need just a couple of tunnels, you should have a lot of options. For the longest time we used PPTP connection through our firewall (watchguard). Don't know if your Linksys has that functionality. Win98/ME/2K/XP have the ability to use PPTP connections so there would be no need for "client" software. You can also configure W2K server and XP pro to be a VPN server. Check out Bob's page. He's got step by step instructions with screen shots. (
If you purchased a dedicated vpn appliance, more than likely you are going to get the necessary client software, if any, included.
