VPN setup but how do I use GRE

I have successfully setup VPN on my Win2k Server and can access from a client throughthe Lan. I cannot access from outside the Lan, I have no firewall but I have setup my port on my DSL/Router using PPTP and port 1723, I am not sure how to use GRE.
