Hi

this no doubt is an idiot question but I've been stuck with this project.

Have an XP remote PC that I need to connect to a network running with a windows 2000 server.

I've purchased two draytek routers for the client because it appears they are the best.

Is the VPN tunnel router to router? ie are the routers acting a a vpn sever? Or do I have to setup the 200o server as a vpn server?

The draytek on line guide only mentions setting up the two routers which makes it all seem very simple!

Would appreciate any info

thanks

Ian

It is a shame you did not post a link to the guide, then we might know what model router you got.

If it allows LAN to LAN IPSec VPNs, and you have different subnets at the server and at the remote, it should be simple. The remote will connect via IP address rather than by name. \\192.168.100.1\mystuff\ rather than \\mainserver\mystuff\

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Hi

Silly me, details as follows:

Router at MAin office and outstation are a Draytek Vigor 2820, I thought that having same make, same model routers would make life a bit simpler.

The guide I am following is located:

The out user needs to access exchange 2000 and their data directory on the Server. They will also need sage but as they have a support contract that is not my problem at the moment!

Many thanks for responding so quickly and on a Sunday.

cheers

and then i get to the spot showing the other options..lol.

to answer your questions:

Is the VPN tunnel router to router?
Yes, based on the guide link you provided

ie are the routers acting a a vpn sever?
in very basic terms, yes

Or do I have to setup the 200o server as a vpn server?
no, this is an alternative method you can use though. with the routers maintaining the vpn tunnel between them, clients i would think would see it as no more than an extension of the LAN essentially :)

Thanks for the replies. probablt not using the best method but in the current financial climate needs must. I sense another learning curve coming but at least hopefully I can get it working for the client and then work on the security issues etc.

cheers
