Hi all:
I am trying to establish a VPN connection to my home network. Let me give you as much information as possible.
My home network has a NetGear WNR2000v2 router. The VPN server is Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The VPN clients are Windows 7 Professional.
The Windows XP Professional machine has Norton 360 installed and Windows Firewall disabled.
This is what I did at each step:
01. Add PPTP port 1723 to Norton 360 rules list as accept incoming
-launch Norton 360
-clicked 'settings'
-clicked 'firewall'
-clicked 'traffic rules' tab
-clicked 'add' button
-allowed default selection (allow) and clicked 'next'
-selected 'connections from other computers' and clicked 'next'
-allowed the default selection (any computer) and clicked 'next'
-allowed the default selection (TCP and UDP) for the protocol drop down list
-selected 'only communications that match all types and ports listed below' and clicked 'add'
-allowed the default selection for the 'filter by' as 'known ports from list'
-checked the checkbox next to port 1723 and then selected 'local', then clicked 'OK'
- clicked 'add'
-allowed the default selection for the 'filter by' as 'known ports from list'
-checked the checkbox next to port 1723 and then selected 'remote', then clicked 'OK'
-clicked 'next'
-selected all checkboxes (create a security history log entry) and (apply this rule), then clicked 'next'
-gave the new rule a name, clicked 'next', and then clicked 'finish', then clicked 'apply', then clicked 'close'
At this point, Norton 360 is allowing port 1723 as incoming for remote and local.
Next....
I then checked the IP address of the Windows XP Professional 32-bit machine and found the ethernet connection to be 192.168.1.2
Next....
I then logged into my NetGear WNR2000v2 router as admin and then clicked on the 'port forwarding / port triggering' option in the menu. Then I added a custom service with the following information:
-Service Name: PPTP
-Start Port: 1723
-End Port: 1723
-Server IP Address: 192.168.1.2 (IP address of the Windows XP Professional 32-bit machine)
-Service Type: Port Forwarding
Next....
On the Windows XP Professional 32-bit machine, I then configured it as a VPN server by doing the following:
-clicked 'start'
-clicked 'control panel'
-clicked 'network connections'
-clicked 'create a new connection' and then clicked 'next'
-selected 'setup an advanced connection' and then clicked 'next'
-allowed the default of 'allow incoming connections' and then clicked 'next'
-Made no selections on the next screen for 'devices for incoming connections' and clicked 'next'
-allowed the default of 'allow virtual private connections' and clicked 'next'
-I then checked all the check boxes for the users i wanted access for and also added a user that wasn't in the list. I made sure to note the capitalization of the information (case sensitivity). Once the users were added, clicked 'next'
-All checkboxes were default as checked so clicked next (tcp/ip, file and printer sharing, qos packet scheduler), clicked 'next'
-clicked 'finish' and verified the new VPN connection was configured on the Windows XP Professional 32-bit machine
Next....
On the Windows 7 Professional 32-bit machine (VPN client)
-clicked 'start'
-clicked 'control panel'
-clicked 'network and sharing center'
-clicked 'setup a new connection or network'
-clicked 'connect to a workplace'
-clicked 'use my internet connection (VPN)
-in the Internet Address field, I typed in the IP address of the gateway (public IP address), left everything else as-is and clicked 'next' (which i got from -I then typed in the username and password of the VPN account created on the Windows XP Professional 32-bit machine and clicked 'connect'
This is where the issue lies. The error I get is:
Connection failed with error 800
The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPSec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPSec negotiation might not be configured properly.
The thing is, I have not setup any IPSec or L2TP. Any ideas as to how I can get this Windows 7 Professional 32-bit machine to VPN into the Windows XP Professional 32-bit machine successfully?
Thanks for reading this long post and hope to hear from someone soon.
