I am in an instutute with very lousy network administration. They block almost all ports for both inbound and outbound. I cannot even let NTP protocol work. Here is my case:

Home: cable modem broad band. I can use a software to let it function like a static IP address node.

Office: behind the institute network firewall. Just has a LAN ip address (192.168.xxx.xxx) that is not accessible from outside.

Hardware: several routers. One D-link 804HV VPN router.

Goal: build a VPN between the computer in my office to my home LAN so that I can: 1. access my office computer at home. 2. Route internet traffics through the VPN server at home, so that I can use any port. (access home machine from office has never been a problem)

The way I am trying is to set 804HV as a PPTP server and use XP build in VPN client to connect to it. But there are two problems:

1. When my client is on the Internet, I can build the connection. However, I cannot use other internet service until I uncheck "Use default gateway on remote network", which prevent me to access Internet through VPN server.
2. When my client is behind a router (so it just has a LAN ip address), then PPTP connection simply cannot be established. The dial up simply stuck at "verifying username and password".

Please help me. Any suggestion, documentation, or hardware, software suggestion would be great.

Thanks.

The DLink router/VPN server is not capable of routing inbound VPN traffic to the internet, so this will not work. Most if not all hardware in this class will not handle the task.
