At a loss any help appreciated.

I am trying to get remote desktop working. I want to display my work desktop (Xp) on my home system (XP). At work we have a linksys Befw11S4 which we have set up to forward ports 3389 and 1723 (trying to remember of top of my head) to a VPN server we set up. I am able to connect to the VPN and I am assigned an ip within the dhcp address range we set up.

My problem is when I try to remote desktop from home I get;
remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections bla bla bla.

I was able to get remote access to work at work so I know remote desktop is set up ok (am I missing something)?

I have a westell veralink 327A at home, do I need to change anything on that to allow the remote desktop to come up. shut down Nortan and firewall on Westell still no luck?

I know my Unix but am at a loss with this stuff.

Anyways I have tried reading through many docs anf forum stuff but thought maybe people would be able to condense all the information I am trying to take in.

If you need more info let me know, I will respond quickly as this is driving me crazy and I can't sleep when I can't fix computer issues ( I dream about this crap, wow I am sad)

Thanks;

CA

Assuming you have estblished the VPN, can you ping the remote computer? If yes, can you telnet port 3389?

I am accessing Windows 2003 RAS from XP at home. PPTP - Forward both of these ports -(TCP Port 1723 and IP Protocol ID 47 [GRE).

Does remote desktop work when you are at work? i.e. can you remote desktop into your workstation from another workstation or server capable of using remote desktop?

Everybody;

Thank you for the responses so far;

remote desktop does work on systems at work.

I read that dhcp needs to be disabled on linksys router when forwarding ports so we are going to test this tonight.

Question for you all;

My linksys router is set up as a gateway and has internal ip of 192.168.1.1, my westell at home also has ip 192.168.1.1 could this cause part of my problem? I understand that our ISP assigns an ip to you router but once it passes that does the internal ip cause conflicts?

Also as far as the firewall goes, I have EZ firewall at work, is there anything I need to do to that to allow the remote desktop once I have connected on the VPN.

MSWORLD;

I think this may pertain to my question above. Since my router at home uses a 192.168.1.1 ip when I try to ping say 192.168.1.100 is it not just looking at my internal network at home and not my work ip's?

Sorry for being so ignorant about all this. Also apologize for not getting back to everyone right away, I was fishing and at the beach with the kids ( sure fire way to forget about computers).

Thanks

CA

You might want to change your subnet at home as yes I've experienced ip conflicts in the past from that very same issue.

Cool that is another thing I will try tonight.

Will keep you all updated.

just wanted to thank those who replied. After changeing my subnet ip at home and assigning a static ip to the server at work things are working great.

Thank you
