Evening guys,

I've recently got into remote VPN topics, but some of the stuff isn't sinking in. I get that you aim the VPN connection to the public ip address unless its on a lan.
I can create the VPN connection but then it comes up with username/password where do these come from, is it username/password of router? or username/password of the account you want to get to i.e a server

Its probably something simple but I'm being thick

Cheers

Lets back up, what are you try to accomplish with a VPN?

You have to set up a VPN account on the router first.
There you determine a user name / password combination.
With these you establish the VPN connection.

Basically im looking at VPN connections at the minute, i know how to create the VPN its just the username/password which confused me.

Was the username/password local i.e. my machines or was it from the remote network side username/password of the router or pc i wanted to access

The previous poster mentioned it was done on the router, how do you go about setting that up?

Cheers

The username password combination has nothing to do with say AD-usernames/passwords. The credentials you need for VPN are set-up in the router.
I for example am using a DrayTek Vigor router.
There I simply open the admin interface, click on Extended settings->VPN and external Dial-in
Then on "Profiles of external employees".
I click an ID, assign a username and a password.

Then I set up the connection on the employees Laptop.
I set it up to connect to the fixed external IP that is assigned to our company and connect with the newly assigned router credentials.

This however will only work with deactivated Windows firewall, else the employee will not be able to access the network shares.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
MiS

Thank you MiS that is exactly what i wanted to know, I use the public ip address that has been assigned to the company for example and use the username/password provided which is located on the router.

Thanks
