Is there any advantage to using a PIX over a router for a VPN tunnel? If using a router, the router is behind the firewall?

For just VPN functionality, I believe the PIX/ASA offers more VPN connections. But it really depends on how complicated a setup you want/have. If you have routing that is only OSPF or RIP then the PIX is fine and offers a lot of good features like IPS and the VPN already on the box. The router is much more flexible but everything is an add on.

Also, if you have the Firewall feature set in the router IOS, then there's no need for your firewall. The router can be configured as such, plus it can do a lot more. Having the IDS IOS feature set is the best.

Did you mean the IPS feature set.....the IDS is detection and the IPS is prevention?
