VPN over Actiontech Wireless USB connector?

I am using Actiontec 802.11b Wireless USB Adapter with Windows XP to connect to a 802.11b wireless Access Point (DLink900AP) and onto router/modem Dlink DSL 504 (NAT) (also the DHCP server). This has worked fine for 2 years and finds the internet etc.. I have tried to set up a VPN (PPTP) but cannot find / register on the VPN on connceting. Another identical computer but conneceted dircetly by wire to the router can use the same VPN to the University with no problem.

Does the Actiontec 802.11b Wireless USB Adapter support VPN? Could the Wireless AP be the problem?
