Hello,

I hope someone is able to help! We have just opened a new office and want our 2 PC's there to connect to the server. I've been told that the best way to do this is by VPN. When a user is to logon, I want them to have to still use the CTRL+ALT+DEL method, is that possible? I'm a complete newbie to this and would really welcome being talked through it step by step. I've given it a shot and have had some problems so what I'll do is list exactly what I have and perhaps someone can suggest a solution.

The server is located in one location with a dedicated IP address. This location has a draytek 2600W router/adsl model/firewall with VPN passthrough activated.

The other office location has two PC's that connect to a draytek router that connects to the main internet connect and gets its address and connection by DCHP. (our office hooks into a larger network and the main connection firewall also has VPN passthrough activated.) At this location, there is no dedicated IP address.

I have setup the server for remote access as defined in the SBS 'to-do' list. I've created the connection manager so that it can be downloaded. However, when I've tried to download it to one of the machines at the new office location and tried to connect, I get Error 721.

PLEASE HELP! It's getting frustrating for the people at this office and there's absolutely no IT budget! So I'm lumbered to fix it!

Many thanks in advance

From a pc within the original network, are you able to make a vpn connection ? This will first verify if your server is accepting vpn connections. If yes, then the problem lies in one of the firewall/routers between the new office and the main office. As for the CTRL-ALT-DELETE login, you get that login if your computer was joined to the domain or if your computer is still in workgroup mode and you changed the way users login from the User Accounts option in Control Panel. Do the first test and give us the results.

How do I make a VPN connection from inside the original network? Is this as simple as downloading the connection manager to a machine and trying to connect?

Everytime I've tried from the outside I get Error 721.

Start, settings, network connections, create new connection, next, connect to the network at my workplace, next, virtual private network connection, next, enter company name, next, do not dial the initial connection, next, enter IP of SBS server, next, finish and then try to connect.

I agree with akwong.

Once you know the VPN works internally. bring your attention back to the remote location.

Verify that the workstations are configured with DNS. Can you surf the web if you just log in locally?

Manually configure the VPN from the clients using the same procedure as akwong posted. Log off of the PC. When you log on you will notice there is a box to check under the password. I don't recall the exact verbiage of it but this lets you specify you will connect using the VPN.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
