SOHO with only the occasional VPN use, so we use the built-in service supplied with Server 2003, using a separate NIC for VPN, using PPTP.

Our VPN worked fine until recently, our firewall/router failed and since then I cannot VPN in. The firewall router had to be replaced. We have an external facing static IP number (for example 82.175.236.42) and this is what we use to use to VPN in. I have configured a rule to forward port 1723 to the VPN server but it still does not connect using the XP VPN client externally to our network, it does work connecting from within our network.

I appreciate it if any body can give some trouble shooting steps, as I said it sue to work fine, but the firewall/router has been replaced so I guess the finger points to this.

Now solved.

I had configured the port forward and sent PPTP to the required server, and, not being familiar with this router/firewall, I assumed that was that. But once the NAT has been addressed, the firewall rules need to be applied i.e. create a new rule and bind it to the correct IP.
