Hi, :-(

I know this seems to be a fairly common problem but I am having a lot of trouble seting this up.

I have a VPN server, on a local IP 192.168.1.2, a D-Link ADSL router (DSL-G604T) with a static IP.
I have set up port forwarding on the router to forward port 1723 tcp to the vpn server, and also UDP port 500 for pptp and ipsec.

When i go to connect through my VPN connection from an external broadband connection I get an immediate error 800.
Interestingly when I change the connection to 192.168.1.2 and access it on the lan it goes straight in.

Can someone help me please?!
Thanks
Ian

what kind of vpn connection, the standard windows one? pptp uses PROTOCOL (not PORT) 47. there should be an option on the d-link for "pptp passthru." enable it, and windows vpns should work.

got it all sorted - well not quite!

I can connect fine, but I cant map any drives at all :-(

any ideas?

Is the VPN server also the File server on which you want to map drives?

yes. is this a problem?
if it is, how do I get round it?

No it's no problem, just when the VPN server is a different machine than the File server, you need to also enable routing on the RAS server.

well, I have read somewhere about a problem existing with having the wins server on the same machine as the VPN server?
question is, which do I move? the WINS one or the VPN?

Or am I talking rubbish again? :)

Thanks

Ian

I haven't seen that problem before, but it's possible...

You could try just having both of them running, just keep look for signs of trouble. If anything goes haywire, turn off RAS and move the RAS service to another machine.
