I'm a VPN newbie, but I managed to get two DLink DI-804HV routers to create a VPN between the two.

It's working...I think...because I can ping computers on the remote network at the command prompt. I cannot however browse the network on the remote through the network neighborhood.

My local network is on 192.168.1.0 and the remote on 192.168.10.0.

My first guess is that it has to do with the different subnets, but how do I reconcile this and join the two networks together? My understanding is that the two networks need to be on different subnets.

In case you need to know, all desktops on both networks are running Windows XP. The local network on active directory controlled by a 2003 server, the remote is all xp home computers, and an old dual PII dell server running 2000 server, but no domain.

It all depends on how the remote computer is set up to resolve names on the network. If it's doing it via NetBIOS broadcasts then it won't work. Broadcasts don't get broadcast over VPN's.

The usual way around this is to use WINS or DNS. Or, you can just map a share via IP address.

Ok, that got me halfway there, thanks for that. I can map drives with IP on the 2000 server on the remote, but I can't map the drives on any of the 3 xp home units on the remote. I can ping them though.

The only protocol installed on on all the machines is TCP/IP

My routers have a setting to allow Netbios to be sent over the VPN, I am not however using Netbios.

Do they have File and Printer sharing on in the network properties? If you can't map drives on them by IP address but you can ping them then the problem is on those boxes.

They have file and print sharing is on all the computers. Might it have something to do with the fact that I'm trying to map from (the computer I'm at) a xp pro on a domain to (the remote) xp home boxes not on a domain?

I never use xp home but maybe you can try to rename workgroup name same like your domain. At least this way you can map from remote location using server name insteads.
