VPN kills my SMC wireless router

I'm using Netscreen remote 8 to a Netscreen 5XP. This connection works flawlessly through our cable modem. When I add the SMC wireless behind the cable modem, we can still make the connection. But, when I put a load on it (like transferring files) the connection gets extremely slow then stops. I have to restart the wireless router to fix it.
I have the latest firmware on the router and port 500 open. I've tried making different changes on the Netscreen like MTU size but the result is the same.
Any help would be appreciated.

Try a different wireless system. I am using an Ornico and Intel and they both work fine. I have a 5XP with three tunnels. Two to an NS100 and one to a NS50. Have experienced no problems transfering large files.

I did not have to change my mtu as well.
