setup:

clients connecting to cisco vpn 3000 concentrator using cisco client, ipsec (certificate).

problem:

this setup has worked for quite awhile but recently users have had trouble. normally they open the vpn client, it prompts them for a username and password and they are logged on (concentrator validates cert, points them to our active directory domain controller, prompts for username/password).

Now, users get prompted for a username/password but sometimes it just keeps prompting and never logs them on. If they wait awhile and try again, it will work normally. This has happened to a few users now.

If it was a problem with the concentrator, why would it ever work? If it was a problem with the laptop, why are others affected? If it was a temporay network issue, why are other users logged on to vpn at that time and not having issues?

Not sure how to troubleshoot it. Every time I try, it works. When a user complains, I have them try while I look at the event logs and it works for them at that time.

My only idea is to upgrade the firmware on the concentrator, since it has been awhile.

has the cert expired or been revoked?
How long have you had the cert on the hardware (self signed?)
