Does anyone know the best method of printing via IP across VLANs? I'm tyring to migrate IPX printing to IP, but having trouble deciding which method I should use since we will also be migrating to VLAN at the same time. My initial thought is to setup an NT server serving as a Print server, but I'm hearing that this method would cause a lot of traffic, since the print jobs will be going across VLANs. I also thought about printing directly to the Jetdirects, but I also hear this would be an administration nightmare and would not be very efficient. Knowing our user population, I'm kind of leaning toward the print server solution since it would be very simple to setup from the end users prespective. So, I'm hoping someone has experience in this and can help me out.... Appreciate the input

My experience is with an HP8500 with JetDirect card.

One disadvantage of using NT as a print server for some HP printers is that the NT drivers won't support all the options offered by the printer. This printer has now been discontinued so there is no development going into the driver set.

Of course if your users aren't worried about the higher end functions or the printers involved don't included those functions this is not a problem. Ian
