I have a windows 2000 AD network serving about 150 people.
Everything works nice and quick without any problems.
Almost every user uses a VPN client (Nortel Extranet
Client) to VPN back to their home office. When the VPN
session is established, the computer no longer sees the
local network or AD servers. This causes incredible
delays in the smallest tasks. I've been trying to track
down the program or service that is constantly checking
for the DC and causing these problems. Does anyone have
an idea what it may be or what may be causign the problem?

NOTE: if I log on locally to the machine (no domain),
these problems disapear, it's only when logged onto the
domain that I notice the severe lag in performance.

try removing the option to use the "Default Gateway on remote network" in the properties of your VPN conector.

we're not using any split tunneling (it's against security). The connection is completely replaced by the VPN session.
