VPN File Manager Speed

What things should I take a look at to speed up file browsing over a VPN. I am accessing a windows 2000 server active domain from home with windows xp pro that is set up on a workgroup. The VPN works well, I am able to access and transfer files fine, it's just gets pretty slow when browsing files.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
