VPN - Error registering your computer 1

I have a xppro laptop that connects to a windows 2003 server running rras. I cannot connect to the server with this laptop. I get the error:

Registering your computer on the network...

Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection.

I have searched for days for an answer and have only found two instances of this problem and both people gave up and reformatted - not an option here.

The connection works fine on any other desktop or laptop which leads me to believe the settings on the server (username, password, etc.) are correct.

The laptop will not connect when connected via the wireless lan to the internet or the wired network card.

I have reset ip (since I cannot uninstall in xppro). I have recreated the id on the server. I have updated all service packs from microsoft. I have updated the driver to the intel netork cards in the laptop. I have run xp tcp/ip repair utility. I have looked in the event log of both the server and the laptop - nothing appears. I am running tcpip and client for microsoft networks and have made sure they are checked in the connection properties.


This seems to be a rare case and I am not sure the error is the actual error that is causing the problem.

VPN error 720 is protocol issue. I would double-check protocol configuration in both sites. These search result may help,

Have spent my life the last few days on technet. I have tcpip running on both the server and the laptop. Many others are using this server from many different computers and no problems. I can even use the information from this laptop on any other computer and it works fine.

It has to be on the laptop, but I cannot figure what is wrong. Internet is fine, firewall turned off, complete virus scan done, and spyware scan done - nothing.

It seems like a corruption on the laptop with tcpip, but all I have found to try was the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" to help refresh that. Like I said only vpn connection does not work.

I am still having no luck.

I have gone so far as to remove the wan miniport (ip) and (pptp) and reinstall. Still get the same 720 error over and over. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have heard that a program called rarepair from microsoft may help, but can't find it anywhere.

I finally worked this out:

Follow these instructions in step One: (Don't worry about uninstalling TCPIP.)

I removed WAN Miniport (IP) and WAN Miniport (pptp)

No need to test in the last step - still did not work.

Follow these instructions in step two:

Find netrasa in c:\windows\inf
Open and place a semicolon in front of the line that starts "Excludefromselect=\" and end with "MS_NdisWanNbfIn,MS_NdisWanNbfOut" under the [ControlFlags] section. (all lines between)

Follow these steps for step Three:
Start a Add new hardware session and choose that the hardware is already installed. Choose to "Add New Hardware" and then select "Network Adapters" followed by "Microsoft" and then both the PPTP and the IP Wan miniport one at a time. (NO need to reboot between these steps)

After you finish both then reboot.

Run the xp tcpip repair utility from your favorite download site and choose to "Reset TCP/IP"

Reboot and try your VPN connection.

Hope this saves someone time in the future.

Hi Nortelfan.

Well, I had the same problem, and I followed your guidance above. I am now able to connect through PPTP (thanks Nortelfan) and I obtain an IP address correctly, but when I am "hanging-up", the connection does not exit, but freezes. I am still able to use the computer (winxp SP2) but I am not able to connect again and I cannot shutdown or reboot the computer. )-:

Do one of you know how to fix this?

I did a modified version of this on my Win2k computer and my VPN with wireless adapter is working again.
