Hey all,

bit of a confusing issue.

We have had a site set up for email last week.

There is VPN connectivity between the domains, but there are no trusts or anything between domains.

If we email from any external account - email gets through. But from our domain.... nothing?

If we disable the VPN link - all then works.

Any ideas? Is there any way to try and track to see where the email is getting sent too.

Hi Dan,

Sounds like quite an interesting one, your internal e-mail is obviously being routed through the network, how strange...

Did you get to the bottom of it yet?

If you ping the domain name internally, does a server on the opposite side reply? Maybe the mails are being sent there via internal DNS and not reaching any SMTP servers?

No fix as yet (except leaving the VPN off)

Ping works fine with the VPN up - as does remote desktop. But email will die - as soon as its off email is fine.

Really frustrating ;-)

Can you clarify exactly what is the situation?

I am imagining:

Main Office (10.10.1.0) - Main.co.uk
Internet Address for Main.co.uk 194.80.10.0

Secondary Office (10.10.2.0) - Secondary.co.uk
Internet Address for secondary.co.uk - 194.80.30.0

When you try to mail from hotmail etc it goes through fine because of the external address, but internally it's not going through.

What is the VPN link going across? Do you use DNS?

Michael,

Main Office (10.10.1.0) - Main.co.uk
Internet Address for Main.co.uk 194.80.10.0

Secondary Office (10.10.2.0) - Secondary.co.uk
Internet Address for secondary.co.uk - 194.80.30.0

Spot on!

When you try to mail from hotmail etc it goes through fine because of the external address, but internally it's not going through.

Yes - only while the VPN is up though

What is the VPN link going across? Do you use DNS?

VPN is across the internet via a couple of ADSL lines. In terms of DNS yes we do use it. Both ends have a DNS server (also the DC).

Cool, I can picture what you mean now...

What mail server do the people on secondary.co.uk use? One on their side or your side of the lan?

If you specify an MX record in DNS for secondary.co.uk which just points to your internet connection (router, or even any Netpilot with an external address) does that make a difference?

Each side has there own exchange server (the secondary site has it based on the DC, at the H/office we have a dedicated server).

I will have to check that out. Will get back to you!
