I am becoming increasingly desperate to solve this problem –I have been searching and implementing possible solutions for weeks now.

Created a simple VPN – from XP Pro SP2 at home (WORKGROUP)(192.168.1.X) to XP Pro SP2 machine at work (WORKGROUP)(192.168.2.X) using XP provided VPN connection.
Static IP at both ends.

The VPN connection works well and I can browse the work network.

The problem is that after approx 10 mins the connection drops and the work machine will then not be able to connect to the internet until I reboot – as soon as I reboot my client connection will re-connect for approx 10 mins and then drops connectivity and so on....

At work we have a Linksys WAG54GS both routers home/work have latest firmware.

I have checked with both ISP’s and the ADSL connection is good and does not drop.
I have spoken to Linksys re there ADSL gateway device and have followed all the instructions to lower the MTU to 1300 and they have checked the settings.
I have used the same settings i.e mtu size on the home router.

I have stopped any software that might be dropping the connection, I have taken out the firewalls, I have even set my power settings to Always on in case it may have been a screensaver interruption.

I have run out of ideas – has anyone had a similar problem or could point me in a new direction.

Please I am open to all suggestions –

Many Thanks
Jack

One problem I had a while ago was DHCP on the home router.

As soon as the client requested a new lease on the NIC, it would drop the VPN. Even the lease was renewed.

This was solved by increasing the DHCP lease time to 1 day.

Thanks Tony

Router already set to one day but I will renew setting just in case.
I know somewhere there is going to be a very simple answer.

Many thanks for your thoughts

Jack

For Info

Never got to the bottom of this problem.

Due to other issues we had to move the VPN to another PC and it worked on that PC with exactly same router/VPN settings as the other PC. Put it downt to a software problem on the original PC but could not isolate it, even with all software stopped or uninstalled xmt O/S we still could not get it to stay up. So maybe there was a corruption in XP somewhere. When I get opportunity I will re-install and let you know if I have any joy.

Many thanks
