VPN client on XP

Im setup a vpn session on my xp box Im trying to vpn to my buddies vpn server which is setup perfect and others can vpn in. when I try it goes to verifying username and pw and just hangs then disconnects me.. any ideas ?? Im running a link sys router if that helps at all.

Dear Sir,
u need to open up ports on ur linksys router for the VPN connection, u may need to open port 500 and/or 1723 for the computer's IP through which u want to use the vpn connection.
