VPN cant use computer names, only IP 2

Im happy I finally got VPN working.

On my VPN server within my company LAN I have 2 NIC cards.
One nic card called "VPN" and the other called "LAN". Both are configured with the same WINS and DNS server at 192.168.0.2 and gateway of 192.168.0.1

I thought this would help, I port forwarded 135-139 at work to the VPN server.

At hope, I also port forwarded these ports to my computer.

I then can connect my home to work using VPN.

Unfortunately when I try to use the computer names of my work LAN, it doesnt work. If I ping a work computer name, it goes directly to my domain host IP address.

My company LAN has the domain name same as our website hosted elsewhere. This website IP is what I get when I ping any LAN computer from home.

At work within the LAN it pings each computer correctly.

I have netbios over tcp/ip enabled everywhere and I dont know what else it could be?

I tried to add a lmhosts.sam entry to a LAN computer with IP, but pinging still gives my domain web IP

VPN host computer is Win2k server
VPN client is WinXP

All service packs and updates applied to both.

So connected to my VPN, if I ping a LAN computer it gives the domain web IP in return.

After I disconnected from VPN, and ping the LAN computer, it correctly attempts to ping that address.

I tried again adding the lmhosts file in the VPN connection, but no go.

unfortunately when I ping that address, it also goes to my domain web IP instead of the LAN private IP address

When I re-read your post, I don't quite understand why you have 2 NIC's, you don't need them
And next you are messing with portforwarding and all, not a good idea, you see the result.
It's not a typical use and impossible to give any recommendations to check like this, who knows how and where the traffic goes through. We can't see that from here ;-) If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

I have a similar problem, only I can't ping anything, not even external sites like Yahoo.com, while connected to the VPN. Can't ping any of the computers in the domain I VPNed to, can't connect to anything except the VPN itself. Other people in my office can connect to other computers through the VPN just fine. What am I doing wrong?

Check the routes with route print, if you don't see yoursubnet.0 routed to the othersubnet.0, it won't work If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

Sorry to be a dunce, but how can I tell if it's being routed or not from looking at the route print? I'm looking at it, but not sure how to interpret it.

your ip address is part of one subnet.
Lets say your ip is 192.168.0.11 then you are prt of 192.168.0.0
The other side is lets say 192.168.5.0

Then in route print you would need a route from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.5.0 on the vpn client If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too

That was it! Oh I've been wrestling with this for weeks and it was in the route table all along! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I had 10.1.1.0 routing to the wrong place for some reason. Thanks again!

Well, I originally tried VPN for the first time with only 1 NIC and looking around the web I found a link stating I needed 2 nics for it.

So ever since then I have attempted with 2 nics.

This would be my 3rd attempt. So I disabled the 2nd NIC and redid my routing and remote access settings.

I then still wasnt able to VPN in okay.

I happen to be looking at the services on that computer, and it turned out Netbios over tcp/ip service was disabled. Although it was enabled in the tcp/ip settings, I didnt know it wasnt enough, nor did I know the service was turned to manual!

So after switching that puppy on, I created a new VPN client connection and it worked

I have found that i can map drives over a vpn if i add the entry to the host file on the client. after a reboot it resolves the name to the ip addy so mapping can be done with the machine name rather than the ip address. if you cant find the host file do a search for it, its in the drivers folder.

That will work, but only with fixed IP addressess, not with DHCP.
And not to mention large networks where PC's can be added or reconfigured daily. _{If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, excpect random guesses or no replies at all. Please specify details.
