Hi,

I'm trying to VPN (XP pro via ADSL - client) into a friends PC (w2k server via ADSL - server). I get connection, but can't see anything. What settings must my friend have to let me through? Please include Protocols, ports, etc... Also, if drives/folders must be SHARED explicitly for me.

Thanks in advance...

HI-

There are several ways to access the machines on the remote network via VPN. Of the two that I have dabbled in, one is extremely easy, and one will test just how important it is to you to browse that remote network as if it were on your LAN.

First off, after establishing your VPN connection, confirm that your machine has successfully obtained an IP address for the remote network:(Command prompt->ipconfig). Then confirm that you can ping the internal address of the VPN server, then do the same with machines that are beyond the VPN server. If all is good there, go to the search (or find on Win9x) feature on the start menu and choose the "Computers" option. Enter the IP address of a machine you know exists beyond the VPN server and has shared resources. You should be able to find it with no problem. If it's a Win2K/NT box you'll also need to make sure the permissions are set correctly.

The second method requires a router-to-router VPN be established, preferrably between two Win2K or NT Servers that act as the master browser on each of their local networks. This VPN can be setup as an "always up" or demand dial link that your server will establish when your workstation requests routing to the remote network (I told you this was a pain). Be aware that it can take up to 48 minutes for the two servers to fully synch their browser lists from the time the link is established. If (and I mean IF) all is set up correctly you should be able to browse the remote network from Network Neighborhood. There is alot of good reading on this at the Microsoft TechNet site.
