vpn broadband usage

I work from home for a large company and connect to them over a VPN. I have broken my arm and need to access my computer from another room. I have gotomypc and can connect to my work computer, but when I try to connect to the VPN it uses up all of my bandwidth on that computer and gives me a message that there is a problem with my internet connection. I have 30 meg service and when I'm not on the VPN I have those speed. When connected to the VPN my internet connection speeds are slowed down dramatically. Is there a way to limit what the VPN uses.
