I do computer consulting for a small electrical engineering company. I recently got the following request from the owner: "Can you research what options we have to put our LAN open as a VPN so we can work on files and programs that reside on our LAN?"

Quite honestly, this is the first time I have heard of VPN. A little checking, using Google, let me know that VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. However, Google also returned over a million hits.

Question: could someone suggest a good online location that gives the basics of a VPN, what it is, why have one, and what you need (hardware-software) to set one up?

TIA,

Art
