VPN and slow connection

I am setting up a VPN between home and work. Both computers are running XP. I finally got past the 721 error and have connected. It works fine but is real slow. I connected through remote access and it runs normal, so I figure my internet connection is good (cable modem). Is there settings on either end to speed up the connection???
