VPN and Outlook not running well

I have a VPN cisco 3000 Box at my host site running a bandwidth of 256K
I also have a VPN client Cisco 3002 Box at a remote site.
They are in a tunneling mode to each other. The problem is when we run Outlook e-mail through VPN sometimes it will be very late. Hour or two and it will be more than just one e-mail it may be 3-4-5 or more.
Is there anything that can be done to stop this late e-mail from happening?

I have this problem too. I wondered if it was something to do with needing to set a static route, but every time I do it claims my destination IP address is more specific than my subnet mask & refuses to set the route. I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what!!
