Is a hardware VPN connection back to the main BCM site the only way to get an IP phone working? What do people that travel with their IP phones do?

You can run an i2050 softphone on your laptop/PC. Otherwise you need a VPN router to connect a Hardphone. Either a VPN appliance on the remote network, or dual NICs with a bridged connection.
