I access a company network from home through a VPN. Alot of the software we use is protected by dongles that are attached to the network. I read that I can access these dongles via remote desktop, but this seems a bit crude. Is there any other way the software I use at home can access these dongles at work through the VPN.

Should work fine because by definition you are on the network.

You may have to open additional ports on the firewall to allow it communication. ie. FlexLM etc.
