Greetings:

I have set up a SBS 2003 R2 at my company and I seem to be having problems with some of the users that are trying to get into the VPN.

Myself and most other people seem to have no problem getting into the VPN and then connecting to the intranet as well as internet sites. It seems that I can browse sites like yahoo, etc. when I am on the VPN as well as access information from the SBS like my exchange and internal web site.

Other people seem to be having problems such as:

When the connect to the VPN they have ABSOLUTLY no connectivity to ANYWHERE. They seem to be in a black hole, as I can not ping them, they can not access anything on the intranet as well as the internet.

I am using PPTP type VPN, and the only way that I seemed to have solved the problem is to have them stop using their router and use the connection directly from their cable modem/internet connection. They seem to have Linksys routers, is there a gotcha that I should know about VPN access for some or some setting that I might be missing. They claim to have all of the VPN tunneling setup correctly as well as I have tried telling them to put their machines in the DMZ

HELP!!!!

Regards,
Andras Vancsa

Linksys has a check box for IPSEC and PPTP passthough, by default they are enable, wonder if they got disabled on purpose for some reason. I would look there first.

I remeber hearing about some Linksys routers dropping PPTP connections. Have them flash their firmware to the latest version and see is that helps.

Also, some routers just don't allow for VPN. Netgear allows for 2 connections, though, even on their lowest-end model. Hope this helps,

I had a similar problem with my new Linksys WRT54G router. I had tried upgrading the firmware but no luck. I could not get a connect. Apparently the GRE was failing...well that was what my IT at work said.

Others on the Linksys web forums were reporting the same problem. I swapped my router for a Linksys WRT54GS. This router had the same problem but after updating the firmware. I could connect but now the connection would not stay up.

So I swapped again this time for a D-Link DIR-655. Well now I love this router but it has the same problem. It drops the connection after 3min.

Some research on the web suggests this might be an MTU problem but I can not get the connection to stay up no matter which MTU settings I use.

I will get with my IT dept on Monday and see if we can figure it out. If not I guess I will be headed back to swap again...and here I thought a 3rd time was suppose to be a charm.
