I was given one piece of advise when I started out with Linux a couple of years ago.
"Pick a distro that a 'friend' close to you can help with when you get stuck."
This probably does not matter so much in the internet world, but I found it of great benefit. There is never any substitute for being able to talk to someone when you ae trying to solve a problem with something not working properly.
