Volume Shadow Copies Vanishing

I've had a good search on the net for this error, but am stuck now and have decided to post:

My file server is Win 2003 R2
VSS is enabled on the data drive with a maximum of 50Gb set aside for VSS.
At random times all of the Shadow Copies vanish. I've searched the event logs but nothing is reported.
Please, if any of you have seen this error then post an answer ... VSS is extreemely useful - but only when it works!
