I am having a problem recovering files using NetWorker User. We check off some files in the index, click "Start", and the recovery fails with an error indicating that the volume is unknown. When I go back into the interface and view the volumes required for recovering those files, it says "Unknown".

I tried running "scanner -i" on a tape or two thinking this might rebuild this information, but when I go back into the rebuilt index to examine the files, their volume is also "Unknown".

I have to admit, I am no expert in this program, and it's been a struggle to just be able to use it at all. We inherited it from another facility at version 4.3 (i.e. ancient history) and there it has stayed.

Note: the server has changed networks several times which has been a total pain, because aspects of the application (i.e. the folder the index is in) rely on the server name. Also, the server and the client are one and the same box.

Q: What causes the volume to be "Unknown"?
Q: Can this be fixed?
Q: Does anyone know the command to just dump whatever files are on the tape, without knowing anything about its contents? I want to do this and get them into NT backup or something simpler.

Thanks for any leads,

Jeff

HI,
I'm using networker 6.12
It happened to me once with win2k restore.
If your selection contain winnt folder (or other system folders) try to unselect it.
Good Luck.

If you run scanner on a volume, it shall tell you the volume
name at the very beginning. If this name and the other
entries cannnot be found in the media db after the process, i guess that the media database is defect.

Try to repair it.

Nope. I'm not recovering any bootstrap/system files

I see the volume name when I run scanner. The problem is when I use NetWorker user (the GUI interface) the volume is unknown and I cannot recover files that I have checked off.

In my post I mentioned that I ran "scanner -i", but it did not fix the problem. Is this the wrong command for recovery of the full index and media database info for a volume?

What about my question:

"Q: Does anyone know the command to just dump whatever files are on the tape"

Thanks,

Jeff

- Initatiate the media db recovery with "mmrecov"

- To recover the client file index, simply run
"nsrck -L7 client_name"
You could do the same with "scanner -i" but then you
have to scann all tapes. To prevent this, NW creates Index
backups.

"Q: Does anyone know the command to just dump whatever files are on the tape"

run "scanner -v -i device_name" - this should tell you.

If you are on an old version, forget nsrck -L7, you will need to use the mmrecov command, for which you need to know where the bootstrap is.
Meanwhile, in Networker user, select the file(s) you want, go to View, Versions and see if there is a version with a known volume.

That's what i said:
- mmrecovers the media db (part of the bootstrap)
- nsrck -L7 recovers the CFI
It is a current and valid command.

Restoring the last good media DB using "mmrecov" solved our "Unknown" volume problem. I was worrying about the client indexes when in fact it was the media database that was the problem. Like I said, I'm no expert - I didn't even know they were two separate things!

Thanks for your help, all.

Jeff
