Volume Copy - Long Filename Problem

Here's what I'm trying to do. I'm running a NW4.11 server. I want to copy everything from a volume to a new hard drive I installed. I've tried using ncopy, and cpqfm.nlm (Compaq File Manager). Neiter of these tools retains the long filenames. This is a problem obviously since a large portion of the files on the volume are long. The ONLY way I've gotten it to copy and keep the names intact is using Windows Explorer from a client computer. This is not acceptable, it's too slow, and not reliable in my opinion. Also, before you say it, long filenames are loaded on every volume on the server. That's not the problem. I've not found enough info on the net about this. Other people seem to have had the same problem, but no one has had a solution.

I need to know of a way to copy everything from a volume, and keep the file names intact. I don't care about trustees or permissions, since this new drive will be put into a NW6 system, and I have to recreate permissions anyways. Thanks in advance for any help. I'm extremely desperate guys, I'm here at work on the weekend specifically for this, and if I can't get it done, I'm screwed.

Hi Ted,

There are a few ways that I can think of.

1. Back from source and restore to destination.

2. Use the NetWare Migration utility and migrate the file system only.

I take it you have mounted the new drive as another volume
if so you will have to use the add name space "long" to this volume to allow long file names (default is dos 8.3).
if you need to restore trustee rights to files the utility tback3 is handy to have

I already got it taken care of. Ncopy seemed to copy and retain all long filenames, but only from certains PC's (pretty weird). As far as what you said: "if so you will have to use the add name space "long" to this volume to allow long file names:

You'll notice I said in my post:

"Also, before you say it, long filenames are loaded on every volume on the server. That's not the problem."

=)

Thanks again guys.

tteknos - of the workstations you have tried this on, are they running different versions of the NetWare client? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I tried it on:

Windows 2000:

Client v4.81
Client v4.83
Client v4.83 SP1

Windows 98:

Client v3.1
Client v3.30
Client v3.31
Client v3.32
Client v3.32 SP1

It was weird. It worked on a few of the machines, all different clients (didn't record all of which worked). I know that the 2 PC's I did the copying on that worked were a v3.32 and a v3.30. Weird thing is, other pc's with v3.32 and v3.30 didn't work. Since the upgrade to NW6, any client prior to 3.30 doesn't work, so I've upgraded most people to 3.32 SP1, and 4.83 SP1 on 2000.
