The volume control on my taskbar will not move vertically. I am running Windows 98. The sound card (soundblaster pci 512) which I recently installed works fine. CDs play, speakers work, the volume control box that pops up in the upper left corner and has a mute box on it works. I have one flag (yellow circle & exclamation mark) in devices which I cannot get rid of : Advanced power management support. Tried replacing the driver to that and no help.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Was the soundcard installed through P'n'P or manually?

I recently had the same trouble with an IBM 300PL machine and it's onboard sound card. Although I could here sound, device manager still said there was a problem with the installation. I would delete it from device manager and let Windows pick it back up, but it still diplayed a problem. Don't ask me why, but after an hour-and-half, it eventually installed properly. I made no changes to IRQ's or drivers.

I found the answer in control panel/multimedia. The preferred device settings for audio playback and recording had been assigned to the new modem I had installed instead of the sound card. Sometimes the problem is so easy you just can't see it! I thought I had checked these settings earlier but I guess I missed them.
