Guys, I'm still getting my feet wet with Novell 6.5 and I have a question. One of my servers has a 96% used on the directory entries section of VOL1. How can I bring this usage down ?? How is this affecting my server ?? Thanks !!
Take a look at these TIDs, but make sure you run a purge of the volumes to clean up what you can. Sounds like you're way behind running something old like 4.x or 5.x. The newer file system (NSS) dos not have these limitations. If you are running Netware 5.1 or newer, you can run NSS volumes but you would need to delete your volumes, but that's another issue should you wish to discuss it.
Actually, these servers are on 6.5 but they were migrated from earlier versions of Netware which is probably why they have the directory enrties issue.
I will read the TID's, thanks a lot for the links.
Is there a quick clean-up that I can use until I decide how to permanently fix the problem ?? How is this affecting my performance ??
Are you saying you have 16million files on a volume? Here is my opinion..
1) I've never had to worry about that stat.
2) I believe that the stat you are seeing will grow as your volume grows in number of files. I don't think it's really bad.
If you do have around 16mil files, I guess that's different (i'm going from the first TID that goomba posted that says there can be 16mil directory entries on 4x and 5.x.) I don't know if it went up on 6.5, but I doubt it since NSS is where Novell has put their efforts.
Other than that, are you having any issues, lockups, slowness, hangs, etc?
If you decide to convert your volumes over to NSS (which I recommend). You can use that conversion utility, reload the server or delete the volume and restore data.
Personally, I used the reload method because there was a lot of junk left on the server that had been upgraded from a couple of times.
But, if you want to delete the volume and restore from backup, MAKE SURE you choose the option in your backup solution to "Decompress compress files" because NSS volumes won't take compressed data from a traditional volumes. For example, in Brightstor, the option was "Force Decompression of Compressed Files" and that should be used on the backup prior to deletion of volume/restoration of data.
Also, you want to take a backup of the trustees, just in case they are not restored. Use something like Trustbar or Trustee, I can't remember which is the newer method.
NSS volumes will load much faster and you will be happy if you convert!!.
