I have 2 remotes offices, is there a way to set the cisco ata 186 to communicate with eachother without using cisco call manager and service providers. please anyone help?

thanks

if you have a cisco router you can use router as h323 gatekeeper and have the ata register to the gatekeeper. you they will both register there e164 addresses so no further config should really be needed. there are also free gatekeeper soloution outthere if you are not running a cisco IOS device..

do you know where could I have specific steps to set the atas as well as the router, and what minimun model of router should I have in order to accomplish this. thanks for the help given.

with those components(cisco 3640 and 2600) could I add another remote office with a cisco 7960 or other ata 186 and another office using other ip phones like micronet?. Do I need a gateway for each location? sorry to ask you this, but I'm kinda new in VoIP. thanks again

ya.. you could run a network on those.. you are really limited to h323 phones though.. ruling out the 7960.. You could grab free sip server/pbx asterix probably being first choice to use 7960.. but overall not worth it..just buy 323 phones..

Do you need a gateway everylocation....
hmm well what kind of office is this.. do you need local numbers for users to dial in.. are you going to have a seperate phone for 911 calls? I guess the answer is no you do not need one.. but probably want at least one fxo port at every location.

Where are you located.. Are you in need of a consultant :)

congoguy.. they doc you posted is completly unrelated to the topic asked here.. in fact here is the only relevant part..(still not usefull to Zmilita's problem though)

You can use a Cisco ATA with an H.323 network that does not contain an H.323 gatekeeper. In this scenario, all calls initiated from the Cisco ATA are directed to a specified H.323 gateway. To specify this H.323 gateway, you configure its IP address using the Gateway parameter, and you disable the H.323 gatekeeper feature by setting the GkorProxy parameter to 0.

Thats great.. but how does he make calls from ata to ata here? hmm and you say we don't need a router.. ok.. what are you going to use as the gateway? Are you planning on using the PSTN to call between AtA's....The ATA on it's own has NOOOOO call routing algorithm.. you need the gatekeeper to perform this.

ccmuser: Can you not read or did you just completely skip over the section in the document that congogrey posted titled "USING MULTIPLE CISCO ATAs WITHOUT AN H.323 GATEKEEPER". This section describes how to to use E164 aliases to map to a specific port on another ATA device. The dialing sequence is rather complicated but if you're looking for a super cheap method of hooking up a few locations then you could easily get around this by using a phone with speed dial capabilities. Before you start telling people how useless there posts are I recommend that you actually read and understand what they said before you start telling them that they are wrong. The person who posted this question never mentioned ANYTHING about making off-net calls so an ATA solution without a gatekeeper OR gateway would fit the solution that they requested. Below is a quote from the document referenced above that explains the dialing procedure. Kudos to congogrey for finding it!

Example
Cisco ATA X is going to initiate a call to Cisco ATA Y (with the following pertinent information):

IP address of Cisco ATA Y—192.168.2.112.
E.164 phone number for the Phone 1 port of Cisco ATA Y—1:5556666
E.164 phone number for the Phone 2 port of Cisco ATA Y—2:5558888
To call the Phone 1 port on Cisco ATA Y, you would dial 5556666**192*168*2*112#.

To call the Phone 2 port on Cisco ATA Y, you would dial 5558888**192*168*2*112#.

no Actaully did.. just seems the 35-100 dollars on ebay for a gatekeeper seems alot better then giving all your users a book on how to dial another office. and the link he posted points to the gateway section anyway...

ccmuser I understand where you are comming from. What I posted was meant to address his specific question. Would this be how I would run a production office...no of course not. This was just how to address getting ATA's to talk to one another without CCM's or any other equipment.

I had a bad day..I will refrain from going off the deepend like that here again :) No need for that, I actually put the question into the context of my work env..wich was may not be what he wanted..

Sorry congogrey...

actually you were all right, thank you guys. I had no idea I could call 1 port to the other with the ata. my question though, was in fact how to talk between 2 cisco ata from remote offices. Now that you told me how, I ask, to talk to other ata do I have to create a VPN so the other ata will have the same local ip? and is there a free program to assign phone numbers instead of putting all the ip address followed by ** without using the CCM because of it price? I don't know if make myself clear here, just to put one ata at home and the other in the office and to talk to eachother without using expensive equipment like pix, routers ,and all that, just to set it up the easiest and cheapest way with also easy of use. Thanks again for your replies.

If you do not want to dial all the extra.. you can run open323 or asterix to operate as a gatekeeper.. I still think your best choice is to buy and old 2500 or 2600 and run 323 gatekeeper right there... I may want to actualy purchase 2 2600 with VPN IOS. In this manner you will be able to perform your VPN functions, QOS your ip traffic, and perform gatekeeper functions..
