I posted this within one of my earlier posts, but I guess it wasn't spotted, so I'll post again.

Does anyone know of a good VOIP analyzer that can analyze Mitel traffic. I'm going to start playing around with Wireshark, but I don't know if it will see Mitel traffic. I think the protocols are proprietary, but not 100% sure.

Anyways, if you have any suggestions, that would be much appreciated

Thanks

There is a wireshark plug in from Mitel

Got it, thanks?

Before I start fumbling around this and to avoid any unecessary hair pulling, is there anything special that has to be turned on for the Mitel VOIP traffic to be seen?

Thanks

No i don't think so

If you look at the add ins you will see a Minet plug in
So i guess it works straight away

You guys are the best. Very happy to have found this forum. I don't know why I didn't look at TekTips before. Its common knowledge that they cover different technical platforms, so why not Mitel, of course.

Thanks

Actually if you need to figure out what's going on with voice traafic only, you don't need any plug-ins. It is normal RTP traffic except cases when you turn on encryption.

Really, ok. And for those who have analyzed traffic, is it best to morror the pBX port on the backbone for a full network VOIP monitor, or mirror the phone ports if it's just a specific phone issue?

Again, I'm using Wireshark, mainly because it's free. I've researched some of the made for VOIP analyzers out there, but way too pricey for the 'powers that be'.

Thanks

To me, it's more important to look at the relationship between where you are and where your problem is. In most network cases you need two (or more) probe points to really tell the story...

Mirroring the pbx will get you signalling and any IP to TDM calls, but probably won't get you any IP-IP traffic. The phone ports on the other hand won't give you any trunking information.

For a full picture you need to mirror each and every port where VoIP equipment is connected. If it's not possible, I would install probes where you have speed change. LAN-T1, Intranet-Internet, etc. In properly working LAN environment VoIP should work without any major issues.
