VoIP question

My experience with this is limited to using callwave when it was free. I was on dial-up then and it cutout quite a bit. Now, I have a cable modem and was wondering what products can I download for free or buy that would get me to the point that I can call land-line telephones from my computer via my cable modem?

I don't know alot about residential solutions but Skype is pretty popular these days.
