I'm an IPO noob! [ponder](Please be gentle)
Great forum ... been learning a lot from the posts.

Here is the issue:
Calls sound muffled and hard to hear.
Buttons on the sets lock up.
The sets freeze up.
Some jitter and delay errors in the SSA QoS alarms.

Facts:
IPO 500v2 6.1(12)
1608L IP Phones (H323) version 1.2200
IPO and Phones are on a VLAN
1GB network bandwidth
G729 Codec w/20ms payload

Any known issues?
What can I do to isolate these problems?

Also ... why do the IP sets appear to register over and over in the System Monitor, or is that just a refresh?

Is there anyway to set the LAN interface on the IPO to 1Gb?

Input/suggestions needed and appreciated!

Did you run a network evaluation on the site? If not don't come begging for help here.

FIrst set the codec to G711 instead G729.
Now it is compressed and with G711 it won't
I think it will sound a lot better.

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

If sets are re-registering then you likely have a network issue. I agree with tlpeter - set phones for G711. You can't change LAN port on IPO to 1gb - instead you should change your switch port to match IPO. Be sure that, in addition to VLAN, you have some QoS mechanism in place. Some switches will simply give priority to a VLAN - which is usually adequate. If you continue to have trouble, you need to do a network evaluation. There is more to it than bandwidth!

PS - your phone firmware should be 1.3 with IPO 6.1.12

Thanks for the replies!

@Rustymutt - Network evaluation was performed prior to install. However, I have since learned that some of the data switches have been replaced to provide POE. This shouldn't have changed much, but the network is now suspect again.

@tlpeter - Changed to G711. Seems to have helped a bit, but still seeing jitter. Largest today is reported as 250,486.4ms. Why doesn't it change to seconds after one thousand milliseconds?
Is this an aggregate number or related to just one call?
Is there any place to control the size of the jitter buffer?

@mforrence - Here is what I see in monitor. Are these truly registration requests or some type of informational message?
237451743mS H323Evt: Recv: RegistrationRequest 10.114.240.101; Endpoints registered: 69; Endpoints in registration: 0
237451780mS H323Evt: Recv: RegistrationRequest 10.114.240.116; Endpoints registered: 69; Endpoints in registration: 0

Firmware version is definitely showing as 1.2200.

Manager version is 8.1(12). Would the set firmware 1.3 be included as a bin file with manager?

Thank-you for your time!

Is the IPOffice the DHCP server for the phones or is there a DHCP server in the network that provides the ipaddress to the phones?
Like mentioned, put the port for the IPOffice on 100mb fullduplex instead of 1gig!!!

Are you using SCN (Multiple IPO) ? or IP Trunk ?

Which model of switch ?

I've same kind of problems

as stated,
change to g711
upgrade handsets to 1.3

if you are getting large amount of jitter on your LAN then there is a network issue.

How many IP handsets do you have and how many users are on the network in general?

if the network is being choked, then split your voice and data between LAN1 and LAN2

OK ... made some progress on this.

Determined the customer is providing DHCP, but the 242 option did not specify the IPO as the HTTP server. This is why the phones didn't receive the new firmware after the quarterly update was applied.

Changed to G711, but still having jitter issues ... and I mean huge jitter issues. Some in the neighborhood of 250,000ms along with round trip delays of 20,000ms.

Question ...
Is there a way I can use monitor to look at the IP Packets on the LAN interface at a level deep enough to see the VLAN Tag?

TIA!

No you can't, but you can see the lease if you have a second DHCP scope configured on a Win server.

On the Phone you can with Mute ADDR (2337) # then * for next....

Can the DCHP server ping the IPO?
Did you do a route add on the Server?
Do you have VLAN routing enabled on the switch?

@amriddle1 - Thanks! That's valuable info, but the users are also complaining of QoS issues; muffled voice, unable to hear, set lockups, button freezes.

@Bas1234 - Thank-you for the response.

Does this allow viewing of the set configuation?

Can the DCHP server ping the IPO? Unknown

Did you do a route add on the Server? Which server and for what?

Do you have VLAN routing enabled on the switch? VLAN is configured on the Data Switches.

Proove that it is a network issue and remote it from the network (including phones)

So you will need at least one switch (poe or not, that is the quesion)
Then you will see happy faces.

This does not solve "the" problem but that can be done later.
